Reflections in Landscapes | Accordion-Style Booklet

Reflections in Landscapes is an accordion-style booklet deliverable. It concises information into a booklet form for the reader to intake the content from the article in a graphically interesting way.

Project Overview

This project was created as part of a Typography 2 class, focused on the integration of text and image, while also utilizing hierarchy to organize information. For this final project, I chose to create an accordion-style booklet, showcasing a few articles about landscape paintings and how they evoke peace and warmth for the viewers and painters.

Articles Used:

Reading the Room: Memory, Dwelling, and the Everyday by Sara R. Hardin

The art of serenity: landscape paintings to calm our souls by Gisela Valencia

Project Goals

1. Create an accordion-style booklet to visually display the articles and their content

2. Use grids, guides, and hierarchy to structure the content

3. Understanding how to integrate text and image, choosing the right fonts, typefaces, and color palettes

I started by creating a grid structure for the booklet, folded in sections of three. Using InDesign, I brought in the text from the articles and images of landscape paintings. I incorporated gold borders around the images, as if guiding the reader through an art gallery.

I then focused on integrating text with the images and observing if the typeface selection communicated with the context and audience. Based on feedback from my professor, I refined margins, adjusted text size, and increased the size of the article titles to create a stronger relationship between the titles and authors.

Feedback

Based on the critique I received, I increased margins to .25 since the text became too close to the margins. I also decreased the text size for the body text which helped with some of the widows throughout the content. I made slight adjustments to the title and author.
